WAPDA inks contract for Kurram Tangi Dam Project Stage-II
The Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has taken a significant step toward advancing the Kurram Tangi Dam Project Stage-II by signing a consultancy agreement valued at Rs776.3 million. This crucial contract has been awarded to a joint venture consisting of four firms, one from Turkey and three from Pakistan, with DOLSAR leading the consortium.
The consultancy services encompass a comprehensive scope, including detailed engineering design, the preparation of an updated PC-I, PC-I for land acquisition and resettlement planning, and the creation of tender documents for the project. The consultancy contract spans a duration of 22 months and is financially supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The contract signing ceremony took place at WAPDA House, on Friday, with Muhammad Shafiq Bhettani, Chief Engineer and Project Director of Kurram Tangi Dam, and Cem Aker, International Projects Coordinator of DOLSAR, representing WAPDA and the joint venture, respectively. The ceremony was attended by key WAPDA officials, including Jamil Akhtar, Member (Power) WAPDA, and various General Managers overseeing the project’s execution.
Stage-II of the Kurram Tangi Dam Project is slated for construction on the Kurram River in North Waziristan District, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. It will be situated approximately 14 kilometers upstream of Kurram Garhi Head works and 32 kilometers north of Bannu City. This stage is set to provide a gross water storage capacity of 1.2 million acre-feet (MAF) and an installed power generation capacity of 65 megawatts (MW). Beyond its power generation capabilities, the project will facilitate irrigation for 38,000 acres of new land while augmenting water supply to an additional 278,000 acres of existing land.
WAPDA has already been progressing with Stage-I of the Kurram Tangi Dam Project, which will irrigate 16,380 acres of land and generate approximately 18.4 MW of electricity.
