Phase-I of Lyari project to be completed by August 2027: Nasir
KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Local Government Syed Nasir Hussain Shah chaired a high-level meeting to review the progress and performance of the Lyari Transformation Project.
The meeting was attended by Member National Assembly Nabil Gabol, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, Additional Chief Secretary Local Government Wasim Shamshad, Personal Secretary to PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Junaid Ahmed Jaidi, Members Sindh Assembly Yousuf Baloch and Shazia Karim Sanghar, PPP District South President Javed Nagori, Town Chairmen and senior officers of the concerned departments.
The meeting reviewed the ongoing development works under the Lyari Transformation Project, water supply and sewerage systems, illegal constructions, illegal water and sewerage connections and various hurdles affecting the pace of the project.
Speaking at the meeting, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah said that Phase-I of the Lyari Transformation Project would be completed by August 2027. He directed all concerned departments and institutions to adopt a coordinated strategy and accelerate the pace of work through mutual consultation.
The minister directed that all hurdles impeding the project should be removed immediately and issues causing delays in development works should be resolved on a priority basis.
He further directed that a joint strategy be developed with the relevant institutions to address illegal water supply and sewerage connections in Lyari, while strict action should be taken to prevent illegal constructions and illegal connections.
Syed Nasir Hussain Shah said that the Lyari Transformation Project had been initiated on the special directives of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who wanted to see Lyari developed as a model area.
He said that, in accordance with the chairman’s directives, Lyari would be developed as a role-model town of Sindh.
During the meeting, MNA Nabil Gabol and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab presented their concerns and suggestions regarding the project and apprised the meeting of various issues being faced in its implementation.
Mayor Murtaza Wahab said that issues relating to water and sewerage lines affecting the project would be resolved to ensure that the pace of development work was not affected.
The local government minister said that the progress and performance of the project would be reviewed regularly and a meeting of all stakeholders would be held every 15 days to assess progress, identify hurdles and ensure timely solutions.
Syed Nasir Hussain Shah also directed that officers with a good reputation should be posted in Lyari Town and said that all officers found responsible for negligence or causing delays in the project should be removed immediately.
On the complaints of elected representatives, he also directed the suspension of the Assistant Director of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), Lyari.
The minister said that negligence and unnecessary delays in development projects of public importance would not be tolerated.
He directed all the departments concerned to maintain effective coordination, fulfil their responsibilities and resolve administrative and technical issues through mutual consultation. He said that improving basic infrastructure, water supply and sewerage systems and providing better civic facilities to the people of Lyari were among the key objectives of the transformation project, which would be completed within the stipulated timeframe.
