Mayor Murtaza Wahab inaugurates Rs360m Jahangir Road project
KARACHI: Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Wednesday inaugurated the rehabilitation and improvement project of Jahangir Road from Gurumandir to Teen Hatti, which has been completed at Rs360 million.
The project covered a 1.4-kilometre stretch of the major thoroughfare and includes road widening, drainage, footpaths, lane marking and street lighting.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mayor Wahab said the road had been widened from 26 feet to 32 feet to improve traffic flow and facilitate commuters.
He said 252,000 square feet of 80-mm paving blocks and 70,000 square feet of 60-mm paving blocks had been installed. The project also included 50,000 square feet each of asphalt base course and asphalt concrete.
According to the mayor, damaged sewerage lines along the road were rehabilitated, while more than 11,800 running feet of trenching were completed for a 36-inch rainwater drainage line. Forty-five manholes were also constructed and the sewerage lines were connected to the Lyari River to improve drainage.
The project further included the construction of footpaths and installation of 80 new solar-powered lights. Six damaged light poles were also replaced.
“Karachi is a city for everyone, and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation is working for all citizens without discrimination,” Mayor Wahab said, stressing that development work was being carried out regardless of political affiliations.
He said the rehabilitation of Jahangir Road was aimed at fulfilling a commitment made to citizens and providing relief to millions of people who use the route. “We will fulfil the promises made to the people and continue the completion of development projects,” he said.
He said work had also begun on SM Taufiq Road and the road linking Gurumandir with Patel Para, while construction of the Nishtar Road Flyover was underway.
Mayor Wahab announced that KMC planned to develop 70 new parks in Karachi during the current year and said the scope of infrastructure projects would be expanded.
The mayor also called for federal development funds allocated to lawmakers to be made available to KMC to accelerate development work in Karachi. He said the municipal administration would continue working to improve roads, transportation and basic civic facilities across the city.
