Garbage Is The New Gold!

Garbage is the new gold!

Some of you may think why and how?

It is so because it can be turned into energy, electricity and fertilisers which will help the economic boost of the country.  This can be done by recycling it into useful products. The waste material is considered useless and has been thrown away by people. Two of the main type are recyclable waste and non-recyclable waste.

There’s a need to know how to turn garbage into gold?

Pakistan is producing 48.5 million tons of solid waste every year and 87,000 tons every day. This number is increasing more than 2% on annual basis. Specifically talking about the largest city of Pakistan, Karachi, it produces more than 13,500 tons of waste daily. Unfortunately, Pakistan being a developing country lacks waste management system. Therefore, they dump garbage into the ground or into landfills. If this practise continues, the situation can be very alarming.

Similarly, dumping waste and garbage is dangerous because it looks unpleasant, it occupies the place for nothing. They dump garbage on a productive land and waste it. Moreover, this waste can be harmful as it produces toxic soil.

In Karachi, people are dumping waste into the sea. Thus polluting sea-water and killing the aquatic life. We need to clean up the country and recycle the garbage into fertilisers and electricity. For this purpose, we should combine the access of cheap labour with traditional methods and modern plants. In Pakistan, to manage waste requires proper recycling centres and compost plants.

Moreover, different steps are involved in the recycling process. First of all, the waste is collected, then a vehicle of curbside collection service goes door to door and collects the waste. The recyclable waste is then separated from the non-recyclable one and rest is composited and sold to farmers. Then recyclable waste is processed to convert it into something useful. The paper is transformed into cereals boxes. Steel and aluminium is melted and turned to new products. Same happens with plastic.

The waste management system is not an ignore able issue in Karachi. Adding it to the “Clean Karachi Campaign” and “Competitive and Liveable Karachi Campaign” would be a wise thing to do. It would help the city to manage its garbage itself which would ultimately turn Karachi into a beautiful and economically strong city.
