13 Inner-City Roads Proposed for Major Upgrade in Rawalpindi
A proposal to execute a development scheme for carpeting 13 roads in Rawalpindi’s inner city through the Communications and Works Department is under consideration.
The scheme would be funded through the Rs2.86 billion development funds of the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation.
According to sources, the corporation’s own development funds are meant to be used for carpeting, rehabilitation and expansion of 13 roads in the inner city.
However, a proposal is now under discussion to assign the execution of the scheme to the Communications and Works Department instead of the municipal corporation.
Sources said concerns have been raised over political interference in the municipal corporation and its alleged lack of capacity to carry out such a large-scale project.
At the same time, officials noted that if a corporation-funded scheme is executed by another department, the municipal corporation could face audit objections.
When contacted, newly appointed Chief Officer Municipal Corporation Faisal Shehzad said the matter was still under discussion and no final decision had been made in writing.
