Sindh Approves Rs. 2.89 Billion for Karachi Development Projects
The Sindh government on Tuesday approved a substantial sum of Rs. 2.89 billion for various development projects, including the construction of new roads to be undertaken by the Karachi Development Authority (KDA).
According to informed sources, the move to assign infrastructure projects to the KDA came on a proposal from the local government department, which cited concerns over the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s (KMC) capacity to take on additional responsibilities.
The decision is seen as significant, particularly as several KDA projects are already facing delays due to administrative and financial hurdles.
The meeting, attended by secretaries from multiple departments, also reviewed requests for both development and non-development funds and discussed the financial constraints affecting public welfare initiatives.
Among other approvals, Rs. 299 million was allocated to the transport department for the procurement of e-bikes for women under a non-ADP scheme.
The committee also sanctioned funds for a water supply project benefiting 35 villages in Gadap Town, District Malir, using water sourced from the M-9 Superhighway, and approved salary payments for Rescue 1122 personnel working in flood-hit areas through World Bank funding.
Additional approvals included increased costs for the construction of the Nawabshah–Saeedabad road, the addition of a drainage system under ADP Scheme 3332, and the procurement of vaccines for the health department.
Schemes related to the works, culture and tourism, climate change, and coastal development departments were also cleared. However, agenda items linked to departments whose secretaries were absent were deferred to the next meeting, with instructions ensuring their attendance in future sessions.
