KMC launches Rs14bln overhaul programme for 139 city roads
KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has launched a Rs14 billion citywide infrastructure programme to rehabilitate 139 roads in all districts of the city. It is one of the largest municipal road development initiatives in the city’s history.
Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced the programme on Tuesday, while chairing a high-level review meeting at KMC Headquarters attended by Financial Adviser Gulzar Ali Abro, Director General Technical Services Tariq Mughal, Director Media Daniyal Siyal and other senior KMC officials.
The Mayor said the programme would include the reconstruction of major roads, improvement of drainage systems, replacement of water supply lines and installation of modern street lighting to enhance urban mobility and civic infrastructure.
“Karachi is entering a new era of development. These projects are not just about rebuilding roads, they are about restoring public confidence, improving municipal services and giving Karachi the infrastructure its people deserve,” Wahab pleaded.
He said the initiative forms part of KMC’s broader strategy to modernise the city’s infrastructure and address decades of neglect through planned investment and transparent implementation.
The Mayor directed all departments to ensure quality construction, transparency and timely completion of every scheme, adding that he would personally oversee both the procurement process and project execution. “No compromise will be made on quality or transparency. Every project will be completed according to the highest engineering standards within the stipulated timeframe,” he said.
KMC Director General, Technical Services, Tariq Mughal informed the meeting that tenders for civil works, including road rehabilitation, drainage improvement, water supply and electrical infrastructure, had been completed in accordance with procurement rules. Work orders would be issued shortly.
Financial Adviser KMC Gulzar Ali Abro said the programme covers major roads across all districts, including Landhi, Korangi, Saddar, Central, Keamari and other parts of the city. Key arteries to be rehabilitated include Kashmir Road, Nishtar Road, Johar Road, Siddiq Wahab Road, Hira Lal Road and several roads in industrial and commercial areas.
The development package also includes a large-scale street-lighting programme covering major corridors such as M.A. Jinnah Road, Shahrah-e-Liaquat, Shahrah-e-Ibn Sina, Sir Shah Suleman Road, Abul Hassan Isphani Road, Shahrah-e-Attar, Fatima Jinnah Road, SUPARCO Road and other major thoroughfares to improve road safety, traffic flow and the urban environment.
Wahab said the programme reflects KMC’s commitment to delivering sustainable infrastructure, improving drainage, enhancing road safety and providing modern civic facilities. The initiative would play a key role in transforming Karachi into a cleaner, better-connected and more livable metropolis.
