Karachi to Dig Up 20 Major Roads for K-IV Project

More than 20 major roads across Karachi are expected to undergo excavation from January 2027 as part of the K-IV augmentation project, raising concerns over traffic disruptions during the 22-month construction period.

Briefing the media, project manager Faisal Javed said pipeline installation would require digging along approximately 96 kilometers of roads. Tendering is underway, with work expected to begin in January.

However, Javed said excavation would proceed in sections of one to three kilometers rather than across the city simultaneously. Crews would install pipelines in each section before moving to the next to limit inconvenience for residents and commuters.

The augmentation pipelines are estimated to cost Rs. 72 billion, although Javed acknowledged that the figure could rise. Two international financial institutions are supporting the project, while the Sindh government will provide 20 percent of the funding.

Javed said the project authorities would also be responsible for rebuilding roads damaged during excavation. Arrangements have been prepared for payments related to gas and electricity infrastructure affected by the work.

Responding to concerns about delays, he maintained that pipeline installation would be completed within 22 months, after which the infrastructure would be handed over to the water corporation.

According to Javed, K-IV will bring an additional 250 million gallons of water from Keenjhar Lake, targeting neighborhoods facing severe shortages or lacking a regular water supply.
