Islamabad’s Park Road underpass to open for traffic by July 30

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has confirmed the expected opening date for Islamabad’s Park Road Underpass, also known as the Margalla Enclave Underpass. It is aimed to be opened to traffic by July 30, 2026.

The new underpass scheme is designed to improve traffic flow on one of the capital’s busiest area and enhance connectivity for several major residential areas.

Additionally, the project is expected to provide smoother travel for thousands of commuters who use the route daily and reduce traffic that developed due to the rapid growth of nearby housing societies.

The underpass will significantly improve access to several key residential communities, including DHA Margalla Enclave, Park View City, and Bahria Enclave. Officials believe the new road infrastructure will shorten travel times, and provide a more efficient transport network for residents and visitors travelling through the area.

The work on the project site started in late January 2026, diversions of the traffic began to facilitate construction activities while keeping it move. Although full construction on the site officially commenced in March 2026, with work continuing over the following months.

Moreover, Government officials informed the Senate that the underpass itself is expected to be completed by July 2026, allowing traffic to begin using the facility before the end of the month. Additionally, side development works around the underpass is expected to be fully completed by August 2026.

However, the construction has created considerable inconvenience for motorists over recent months. Ongoing work has increased congestion along Park Road, resulting in heavy traffic. People travelling through the area have regularly experienced delays ranging from 20 to 30 minutes, particularly during morning and evening peak hours.

In a separate development, the federal government of Pakistan increased the token tax on cars in the capital, Islamabad.

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue, approved an increase in the token tax on all those cars that are registered in Islamabad.

According to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Islamabad, Irfan Nawaz Memon, the hike took place at the time when all other provinces announced an increase in the token tax on cars within their province.

DC Islamabad added that to meet that gap, the standing committee has approved the request to raise the token tax on cars.
