Construction of nine small dams approved
The Punjab Small Dams Organization has given approval to construct nine new dams in the Rawalpindi division and Islamabad. In this regard, tenders have been issued to hire firms for topographic survey of the dams. The topographic (survey) of all these dams will be completed in two months, and funds of Rs24.87 million have also been allocated for topographic surveys of all these dams.
Following the survey report, the project concept (PC-1) and feasibility report will be prepared to construct these dams. The construction of these dams will be started in the new financial year 2022-23. Under the plan, the Chirah Dam on Soan River near Chirah village has been restored to be constructed. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council approved Chirah Dam in 2009.
The Chirah Dam will have the capacity to supply 15 million gallons daily water to the twin cities. Work on the project worth Rs5.3 billion could not be started.
The topographic survey of the Chara Dam will cost Rs125,000. The dam is estimated to cost over Rs3 billion. The other small dams are Sundial Dam in Attock, Taj Bara Dam in Attock, Jalwal Dam in Attock, Jamal Dam in Chakwal, Manwal Dam in Chakwal, Lahri Dam in Jhelum, Doomle Dam in Chakwal and Godha Atam Singh Dam.
These dams will irrigate the vast barren lands of the Rawalpindi division and Islamabad and will also be used for drinking water. New amusement parks will also be constructed near these dams.
