CDA Asks NHA Not to Connect Kharian-Rawalpindi Motorway at Rawat junction of GT Road
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has ordered the National Highway Authority (NHA) to refrain from connecting the projected Kharian-Rawalpindi Motorway (KRM) at T. Chowk Rawat junction of GT Road due to the heavy traffic on Islamabad Highway and other routes.
Intercity traffic from Sialkot, Lahore, Kharian, etc., travelling to Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), northern districts, Murree, and Kashmir will directly approach Islamabad via Islamabad Highway and its direct connectivity with KRMP will increase traffic burden on the highway, the CDA wrote in a letter.
The NHA’s KRM project director received the letter dated September 8 from the author. The NHA received a letter in this respect from the CDA, according to sources there and the CDA suggested that the NHA connect the KRM to the Rawalpindi Ring Road.
According to CDA representatives, Islamabad Highway already accommodates both local and major traffic, especially between Islamabad and Lahore. They claimed that because it connects to GT Road at Rawat, the highway serves as a crucial conduit between Punjab, Azad Kashmir, and KP.
Additionally, it is overcrowded due to the numerous housing societies that are situated along its length and the daily entry of thousands of automobiles into Islamabad.
Particularly from its Koral to GT Road segment, the roadway frequently experiences traffic congestion. Currently, the CDA is expanding until GT Road as part of a Rs11 billion project through Frontier Work Organization (FWO).
The Islamabad Highway and other highways in the city would both experience more traffic, according to the officials, if KRM was connected at T. Chowk.
