Lahore is Upgrading 9 Underpasses
The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has started another round of upgradation work on underpasses along Canal Bank Road, just a few years after Rs. 300 million was spent on renovating nine of them.
The earlier project was carried out by the Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA), which removed existing tiles from the underpass walls and replaced them with a rock-wall finish.
At the time, TEPA officials said the new treatment would have a longer life and reduce annual repair and maintenance costs.
However, within three years, the rock-wall finish at the underpasses had deteriorated, while several decorative lights installed during the renovation were stolen. The underpasses were later repainted, raising questions over the durability of the earlier work.
The nine underpasses included Doctor’s Hospital Underpass, Jinnah Hospital Underpass, Punjab University Underpass, Muslim Town Underpass, Ferozepur Road Underpass, FC College Underpass, Jail Road Underpass, Mall Road Underpass and Dharampura Underpass.
The latest upgradation work was reviewed during a meeting of the LDA Engineering Wing chaired by LDA Director General Tahir Farooq.
Officials said repair and restoration work was progressing on underpasses on both sides of Canal Bank Road from Thokar Niaz Baig to Mall Road. The work includes asphalt laying, road signage improvements, and other restoration measures.
Tahir Farooq directed officials to ensure durable and high-quality work during the ongoing upgradation.
