Deadline Set for Completion of Islamabad Model Jail

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited the long-delayed model jail under construction in Islamabad’s Sector H-16 on Tuesday, setting a firm deadline for the completion of its first phase within this year.

Accompanied by Minister of State Talal Chaudhry, Naqvi toured the site and reviewed progress on key facilities. After years of delays since the project began in 2011, construction has recently accelerated. Two barracks are now complete, while check posts and the central watch tower are nearing completion.

Naqvi directed officials to work around the clock to ensure the first phase—designed to accommodate 1,500 prisoners—is finished on schedule. He also ordered the construction of two additional barracks within 90 days and called for the swift completion of the jail’s 34-bed hospital and main kitchen.

During the visit, Naqvi instructed the DIG Islamabad Police to submit a comprehensive plan for staff deployment at the new facility. He emphasized the importance of meeting all deadlines and maintaining construction quality.

The inspection was attended by the Federal Secretary of Interior, DIG Islamabad Police, Deputy Commissioner, ADCG, CDA officials, contractors, and consultants. Officials briefed the minister on the project’s history, noting that work had been stalled for several years before the recent push to complete it.
