Wapda chairman visits Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower project after Indian attack

Wapda Chairman retired Lt General Sajjad Ghani visited the Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project — located approximately 41km from Muzaffarabad — after the dam site was damaged in Indian attacks a day earlier.

He reviewed the damages at the dam site located in Nowseri near the Line of Control and strongly condemned the attack. “International laws, including the Geneva Convention, do not allow attacking water structures even during a full-scale war,” he said.

The chairman was apprised that the Indian shelling started at 1:15am on May 7, and continued for about six hours till 7:15am. As a result, hydraulic power unit 1 of the intake gates was damaged as well as the reinforced concrete structure at De-sander 1 and 3.

“They [India] meant to attack not only the dam sites but also the general population here, the dam’s colony as well as the staff and personnel present at the site,” he added while speaking to the media.
