Opening Date of Karachi’s K-IV Water Project Announced

Chairman of WAPDA, Engineer Lt. Gen. Sajjad Ghani (Retd.), recently inspected the main construction areas of the K-IV Water Project, according to a report by ARY News.

During the visit, he was briefed on the progress of the initiative, with the first phase expected to become operational by June 2026. This phase is projected to deliver 260 million gallons of water per day (MGD) to Karachi. The chairman highlighted the importance of consistent and timely funding to ensure the project stays on track.

He also acknowledged the role of the Sindh government in providing the necessary power supply for pumping stations. He appreciated the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) for its efforts in expanding the water distribution network.

Currently, 63% of the construction work has been completed. Key components of the project include an intake structure at Keenjhar Lake, multiple pumping stations, and a network of pressurized pipelines that will carry water into Karachi.

The K-IV project is being executed in two phases. Once completed, the second phase will add another 390 MGD, bringing the total water supply capacity to 650 MGD.

As per official figures, Rs 75.21 billion has already been utilized from the approved budget of Rs 126.40 billion.

Initial testing has been conducted on a 15 km stretch of the pipeline to assess its capacity to handle water pressure. Another 25 km segment is scheduled for testing in June. Additionally, sleeve pipe installations under railway tracks have been completed, ensuring uninterrupted water flow.

Chairman Ghani has directed project consultants and contractors to accelerate construction efforts to meet the set timeline.

Once operational, the K-IV Water Project is expected to significantly ease Karachi’s water shortage and provide a sustainable solution to meet the city’s rising demand.

In related developments, the Sindh government announced that NEPRA has approved two solar power projects with a combined capacity of 270 megawatts. According to the provincial energy department, a 120 MW project will be set up in Deh Halkani, while another 150 MW plant is planned for Deh Methagar.
