Karachi to Sukkur motorway construction top priority: Abdul Aleem Khan

Federal Minister for Investment Board, Communications and Privatization Abdul Aleem Khan presided over a high-level meeting at the National Highway Authority (NHA).

Federal Communications Minister Abdul Aleem Khan announced a comprehensive new task and departmental action plan for the National Highway Authority (NHA).

The meeting focused on accelerating the construction and repair of critical road infrastructure across Pakistan, particularly emphasizing the need for safe and standard motorways.

Minister Khan outlined the construction of a standard and safe motorway from Karachi to Sukkur as the top priority.

He also directed the immediate construction of roads from Karachi to Quetta and from Mansehra to Babu Sir Top, aiming to enhance connectivity and safety in these regions.

Highlighting the need for financial independence, Minister Khan urged the NHA to raise its funds by increasing revenue and not to rely solely on government funding.

“The government funds will not be wasted; there will be zero tolerance on corruption,” he emphasized. This directive is aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability in the use of funds.

To maintain road safety and infrastructure integrity, the NHA will enforce strict regulations on truck weights, prohibiting vehicles with loads exceeding specified limits from using the highways. This measure is expected to reduce road wear and enhance safety for all motorists.

Abdul Aleem Khan called for a change in the NHA’s attitude, urging the organization to work with honesty and dedication to become a reputable entity for the country and its citizens. He stressed the importance of making the NHA profitable and ensuring that employees and officers receive competitive salaries and packages.

Federal Communications Minister highlighted the strategic importance of expanding Pakistan’s road network to connect with Central Asian countries. The vision includes the potential for the NHA to secure contracts in international markets, such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Minister Khan instructed that all motorways, including the Lahore-Sialkot Motorway, be equipped with M-Tag systems to streamline toll collection and enhance efficiency. He also mandated third-party evaluations from multinational companies for various projects to ensure quality and adherence to international standards.

The meeting included a detailed briefing on the construction and repair of roads in Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Minister Khan’s directives aim to transform the NHA into a financially independent, transparent, and efficient organization, capable of competing with the private sector and contributing significantly to the country’s infrastructure development.
