GCU seminar highlights urgent need for dam construction in Pakistan

Lahore: A critical seminar focused on the Indus Water Treaty and Pakistan’s water security was held at Government College University (GCU) Lahore, emphasizing the urgent need for dam construction. The event, organized by the Quaid-e-Azam Political Science Society, brought together experts to discuss the treaty’s historical context, current challenges, and future implications.

Titled “Indus Water Treaty: Past, Present, and Future,” the seminar featured prominent speakers, including Muhammad Suleman, Chairman of the Sindh Tas Water Council Pakistan; Abdul Basit, former President of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Masood Ali Khan, Chairman of the Institute of Engineers Pakistan; Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) Anwar Mehmood Khan; and Professor Dr. Fauzia Ghani, Chairperson of GCU’s Department of Political Science.

Speakers underscored the historical significance of the Indus Water Treaty and its profound impact on Pakistan’s water resources. They highlighted the growing challenges posed by climate change, increasing population, and escalating water demands, which have placed immense strain on the nation’s water infrastructure.

A central theme of the seminar was the critical importance of constructing new dams. Experts argued that dam construction is not only essential for sustainable water management but also crucial for ensuring economic stability and bolstering energy production.
