Construction Begins on Main Mohmand Dam Structure

Islamabad, 24 May 2025: The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has reached a significant milestone as Mohmand Dam construction officially begins on the main dam structure.

This development signals a new phase in one of Pakistan’s most crucial hydropower and water conservation projects, with completion expected between 2027 and 2028.

Before this advancement, several foundational components were completed, including the river diversion, upstream and downstream coffer dams, excavation of left and right abutments, and the dam’s plinth.

The Mohmand Dam, located on the Swat River in the tribal district of Mohmand in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is set to become the world’s fifth tallest concrete-faced rockfill dam at 213 meters high.

To commemorate the achievement, Federal Minister for Water Resources Mian Muhammad Mueen Wattoo conducted an official visit to the site.

He was accompanied by WAPDA Chairman Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Sajjad Ghani and senior officials from the contractor and consultant teams.

The minister toured key areas, including the main dam, diversion system, spillway, power house, and power intake tunnel.

During the inspection, the project team informed the delegation that construction activities are actively underway at 14 different sites.

The minister expressed satisfaction with the progress and reiterated the government’s dedication to ensuring timely completion of critical infrastructure projects like Mohmand Dam.

The minister acknowledged that meeting Pakistan’s growing demand for water and affordable electricity is a national priority.

He assured continued support from the Ministry of Water Resources, reinforcing the federal government’s commitment to completing this mega project.

The Mohmand Dam will hold 1.29 million acre-feet (MAF) of water, enough to irrigate over 18,000 acres of new farmland in Mohmand and Charsadda, while enhancing water supply to 160,000 acres of existing fields.

The dam’s 800 MW installed capacity is projected to contribute 2.86 billion units of clean hydropower to the national grid each year.

In addition to energy and irrigation benefits, the dam will also reduce flood risks in Peshawar, Charsadda, and Nowshera, while supplying 300 million gallons of drinking water daily to Peshawar.
