China to Construct Angola’s First Motorway

The Chinese firm ‘China Road and Bridge Corporation’ (CRBC) has secured a contract to build the country’s inaugural motorway valued at approximately US$2.5 billion (€2.6 billion), which will span 1,400 kilometers (870 miles), connecting the northern and southern regions of Angola.

Initially approved as a public-private partnership in 2020, the motorway will also facilitate transportation links with neighbouring Namibia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Key provinces set to benefit from enhanced connectivity include Cunene, Zaire, and Cabinda.

Among the project’s highlights are planned bridge constructions, notably over the Congo River, to connect Angola’s Cabinda enclave with the province of Zaire. Preliminary studies for the motorway are scheduled to start later this summer, paving the way for full-scale construction expected to begin between late 2025 and 2026. As of now, a specific completion date has not been finalized.
