Punjab Govt Forms Safety Committee for Construction Sites

The Punjab government has formed special committees to oversee safety at construction sites under the Punjab Development Programme (PDP).

Each committee will be led by the deputy commissioner of the respective district and will include officials from the Punjab Local Government Department.

The decision was announced during a PDP review meeting chaired by Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafique on Thursday. Punjab Local Government Secretary Shakeel Ahmed Mian and Special Secretary Asia Gul were also present at the meeting.

During the session, PDP Project Director Brigadier Asad Mahmood (Retd.) shared an update on project progress in 46 cities. The minister stressed the need for strict enforcement of safety guidelines, particularly at excavation sites.

Rafique said construction work has begun on stormwater drainage systems and underground water storage tanks. A total of 67 underground tanks will be built under the PDP. In addition, 33,160 manhole covers will be installed across different cities.

He also announced plans to construct 56 new wastewater disposal stations, while 61 existing stations will be rehabilitated. All disposal stations will be converted to solar power as part of the program.

According to the minister, wastewater treatment plants under the PDP will have the capacity to treat 323 million gallons of water per day.
