Work on Kashmir Road’s breached section begins

GUJRAT: The civil work has been launched to build a major breached section along the Kashmir road near Malhu Khokhar by the highways department prior to the Kashmir Solidarity Day being observed on Feb 5 (Thursday).

A concrete structure of an underground water pass (a small bridge known as puli in local parlance) is now being constructed along the road to divert the water flow towards the Bhimbher storm water channel in the city outskirts, said a senior official of the highways department.

The breach had been done in September the last to divert the flow of flash flooding water after which the main Kashmir road remained closed to traffic for at least six to eight weeks.

However, the traffic was restored along the road through laying a makeshift pipeline underneath the road filled with the muddy track around three months ago.

An official of Gujrat district administration said as the Punjab government had recently released the funds for the restoration of Kahmir road, the communication and works (C&W) department started the construction of a concrete structure at the site for the smooth flow of traffic along the route.

He said the constitution work might be completed by the end of March after which the road would completely be restored whereas the water flow would too be diverted on a permanent basis.

The people of the area have been demanding a permanent solution to the troubled patch since the breach occurred.
