PEC Workshop Addresses Key Challenges in Construction Industry

The Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) organized a Construction Projects Stakeholders Consultative Workshop to address pressing issues in the construction sector and propose actionable reforms.  

Led by PEC Chairman Engr. Waseem Nazir, the event brought together stakeholders, including industry professionals, constructors, consultants, and experts, at IFQ Hotel, Islamabad. The workshop focused on capacity building, regulatory reforms, and aligning the sector with international standards. 

Engr. Waseem Nazir emphasized the importance of upholding core engineering values to enhance the competitiveness of Pakistani construction companies in global markets. He outlined the critical need for a collaborative approach to resolve capacity gaps and

employability concerns while streamlining the registration framework to facilitate sector growth. He also urged stakeholders to align their efforts with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030. 

Participants engaged in detailed discussions on key challenges facing the industry, including the limited participation of Pakistani companies in regional projects and barriers to capacity building. Recommendations for reforming the regulatory framework to make registration and renewal services more accessible were thoroughly debated. Proposals to address employability issues and enhance the skill set of workers in construction projects were also reviewed. 

The workshop concluded with the presentation of an actionable roadmap for implementing targeted reforms over the next six months. This roadmap, presented by the PEC Chairman, included clear timelines and responsibilities to ensure measurable progress.  

Engr. Waseem Nazir reiterated PEC’s commitment to fostering a responsive regulatory environment where all stakeholders could thrive, contributing to the sustainable growth of Pakistan’s construction sector. 

Stakeholders attending the workshop, including Engr. Syed Ashfaq Hussain Shah, Engr. Arshad Dad, Engr. Shahid Rafi, Engr. Imran Cheema, Dr. Tahir Masud, Engr. Abdul Qadeer, and Engr. Farhat Adil, commended PEC’s initiative to provide a platform for open dialogue. The event marked a significant step toward ensuring that Pakistan’s construction industry remains innovative, competitive, and aligned with global best practices.
